RICHMOND, VA (October 10, 2016) — In partnership with Henrico Health Department, Hitting Cancer Below the Belt, Inc. (HCB2) will giveaway up to 240 Fecal Immunochemical Tests (also known as FIT Kits) to uninsured patients who meet screening criteria as they arrive for Free Flu Shot Day, Wednesday, October 26. The two-site event is coordinated by the Henrico Health Department.
“Early detection is the best defense against colorectal cancer,” says HCB2 Founder and President Melinda Conklin. “The problem is many people try to avoid getting a colonoscopy, unless they feel it’s absolutely necessary — so early warning signs often go undetected.”
Unlike colonoscopies, a FIT Kit is a simple, noninvasive early-detection device that can be used in the privacy of your own home with no preparation necessary. Individuals provide a fecal sample and send it to a designated lab in a specialized, pre-paid container. If the FIT result is positive, the individual will require a colonoscopy for further evaluation.
“Our mission is to support colorectal cancer awareness, education and prevention throughout the Richmond community,” says Conklin, “Increasing screening rates is an important part of that, especially when it’s for the uninsured and less fortunate individuals in our community who need our help the most.”
Stephen Richard, MD, Clinical Director for Henrico Health Department stated: “The Henrico Health Department is partnering with HCB2 in this endeavor as part of a nationwide effort called the ‘2018 initiative.’ Currently only about 65% of eligible individuals are screened for colorectal cancer. The 2018 initiative strives to raise that to 80%, nationwide; if this rate is achieved it is estimated that over 200,000 lives will be saved. We see partnering with organizations like HCB2 as an obvious way to strengthen community health. We are most appreciative of HCB2 generous support of our citizens and encourage everyone to come out, get a flu shot, and learn more about colorectal cancer.”
The FIT screening tools will be available at two locations: Henrico Theater (305 East Nine Mile Rd. Henrico, VA 23075) from 3pm to 7pm and Mount Vernon Adult Education Center (7850 Carousel Ln. Henrico, VA 23294) from 11am to 7pm. HCB2 will be in attendance at both locations to distribute screening tools to qualified patients, provide instructions on the FIT Kit, and discuss colorectal cancer prevention education.
“This is the first year we’ve partnered with Henrico Health Department to offer the FIT Kits,” says Conklin. “And it won’t be the last until we put an end to this terrible disease.”
